Youth Justice Project Releases SRO Recommendations

Youth Justice Project

Durham, NC — Members of the Youth Justice Project’s Youth Steering Committee (YSC) released a series of recommendations for Durham Public Schools and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office regarding school policing. The recommendations stem from a School Resource Officer Town Hall hosted by the YSC in early April, incorporating feedback and discussion from the attendees.

The major themes of the recommendations are as follows:

  • Increased Transparency and Accountability
  • Increased Student Feedback and Oversight
  • Consistent Guidelines and Training

“Our youth steering committee members want all students to feel safe in Durham Public Schools. However, it was clear from the feedback gathered at the Town Hall that current school policing practices are making many students feel less safe at school. It is our hope that the Durham Board of Education, Superintendent, and Sheriff’s Office will promptly review and act upon these recommendations for the upcoming school year” said Peggy Nicholson, Director of the Youth Justice Project.
