Late last week, Angelina Jolie gave a speech on sexual violence in Johannesburg at the African Union Summit. According to Angelina, “we need policies for long-term security that are designed by women, focused on women, executed by women – not at the expense of men, or instead of men, but alongside and with men.” She also pointed out that sexual violence happens everywhere – in places with conflict and peace – and is considered a “lesser crime and lower priority.” I couldn’t agree with her more – sexual violence happens right here in the United States, a nation where women have to PROVE they were victims of assault and where there is an endless backlog of untested rape kits. I also want to make sure we’re not having a gender-binary conversation. Sexual violence does happen to people of all genders.

It’s summertime, and you know what that means! Everyone starts to body police each other on what to wear and eat and how to look and act to get that “beach body.” We need to STOP doing this. This article has five body shaming comments that we really need to stop saying to each other-and to ourselves! It can be really easy to judge ourselves and each other, but it’s unhealthy. #HealthAtEverySize #IWearWhatIWant

We’ve all heard about Rachel Dolezal’s now-famous portrayal of herself as African American in her career as a civil rights activist for the NAACP. But aside from the sensationalized coverage of how she managed to hide her white identity for so long or how she managed to change her appearance so drastically, it is important to ponder the important questions and how Dolezal’s actions fit into the larger framework. This series of essays highlights the big questions, such as the fluidity of racial identity, multiracialism, white privilege, and the social construct of race. A great read!

Michelle Obama has long advocated for quality education for America’s youth, but her newest initiative, Let Girls Learn, speaks for a whole new group: girls in impoverished nations around the world. Her initiative seeks to empower young girls around the world by removing social, spatial, and financial barriers that limit opportunity.
