Checkpoint Monitoring Training

Tagged:
Date:
Jun 22 2009 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Location:
Friends Meeting House - 404 Alexander Ave., Durham
Introduction:
Come be trained to monitor police checkpoints for signs of racial profiling. Training is co-hosted by the Durham Immigrant Solidarity Committee.

At this training we will give interested community members the tools and information they need to monitor traffic checkpoints in the Triangle Area for evidence of racial profiling. We are particularly concerned about increases in profiling against members of immigrant communities as more and more local law enforcement agencies formalize cooperative agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

IAM members of Local 369 at Moncure Plywood in Moncure, N.C., have been on strike since July 20 after the company committed numerous Unfair Labor Practices including coercing union members to withdraw from the union or lose their jobs. Moncure management then unilaterally implemented a contract which included mandatory 60-hour work weeks, the elimination of almost all aspects of seniority, and unfair increases in health premiums. Lastly, with the consent of its corporate owner, Atlas Holdings, our members were permanently replaced. Harm-Free Zone Roundtable

Tagged:
Date:
Mar 14 2009 10:00am - 3:30pm
Location:
Stanford Warren Library - Durham NC
Introduction:
Discussion about reducing the reliance on police and prisons as a solution to social problems and grassroots community-based justice strategies.

SCSJ invites allies and organizers to participate in an exciting new project that is developing in our area called the Harm Free Zone (HFZ). The purpose of the HFZ is to reduce our community’s reliance on police and prisons as a solution to social, economic, and political problems. The project will offer tools such as trainings, dialogue, and other materials that can help strengthen a community’s response to conflict and violence.

We are hosting a “roundtable” meeting on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 10:00am-3:00pm in Meeting Room #2 of the Stanford L. Warren Library, 1201 Fayetteville St., Durham, NC. We would greatly appreciate your feedback about the viability of this project and hope you will work with us to launch a harm free zone within your community. Lunch will be provided free of charge.

The Harm Free Zone project grew from the ideas of several people in the Triangle area. We are a group of concerned community organizers, artists, and educators based in Durham and Chapel Hill. The HFZ organizing committee consists of organizations such as Critical Resistance, Ella Baker Center, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, SpiritHouse, UBUNTU, and the Youth Noise Network. We are also interested in expanding the HFZ organizing committee—the core group of people (individuals and organizations) who are grounding the project—and would love for you to join us!

Please RSVP to 919.452.1972 (evenings preferred), to let us know if you can make it. We look forward to talking, sharing and building with you on March 14th!
